Is life holding you down?

The problem: Does life seem to be holding you down and you feel like you have an elephant of problems following you around? The solution is to take charge of your key concerns in life and commit yourself to taking them on before the elephant is too big to carry.  One of my favorite golden rules in life I try to follow is if you have something in life that’s bothering you then “face it and choose to accept it or change it, but don’t just complain about it”.  With our fast moving society we live in, we are all juggling several problems at once but if we want to live the life we choose to live then we need to commit ourselves to looking at what’s holding us back from being happy in our daily lives and make some changes.

The solution: Make a list of 5 to 10 things that’s holding you back from being happy in your daily life or things you would like to change in your life and call it “my commitment list.”

If the list is too short you won’t address enough to really change your daily life. If the list is too long (over 10) then you may take on too many things and feel overwhelmed. The challenges you put on your list doesn’t have to be major life event changes. It could be small challenges like losing 10 pounds, eating better, or addressing a bad habit. Maybe one of your challenges is not being so tired and exhausted every day or choosing to spend more one on one time with your child. Perhaps you have a physical issue that’s been bothering you for months or years and haven’t taken the time to deal with it.

The next step is to write a short solution after each problem on how you’re going to take on your challenge. If your challenge was spending more daily one on one time with your child, maybe the solution is committing yourself to reading a bed time story to them each night for 15 minutes. If your diet is one of the things you want to fix, maybe the solution isn’t a full blown diet plan, maybe it’s simply cutting out soda and fast food for lunch and eat more salads.

Here is an example of a “commitment list” to help get you started.

  1. Diet- cut out soda and fast food for lunches, add a glass of V8 to my breakfast.
  2. Out of shape- Work out 3 days a week for 30 minutes.
  3. Time with Kids- Read bed time story for 15 min each night.
  4. Family time- Plan 2 fun activities a month to do as a family
  5. Dog- Spend 10 min a day training the dog to fix bad habits and obey.
  6. Starting the day on a good note- Read my positive affirmation first thing in the morning.
  7. Personal time- plan an hour each week for personal down time, reflection, and quiet time.
  8. Job promotion- Schedule time to address and plan steps to take to change my job to work toward getting the promotion I want.
  9. More attention to spouse- Plan a date night twice a month to focus on relationship.
  10. Daily exhaustion- go to bed 1 hour earlier and wake up 20 minutes earlier to give myself more time to awake and prepare for the day.

Now that you have created your own “commitment list,” keep it somewhere so you can review it daily.

The more often you review it, the better chance you have at keeping your list a priority in your life.

For best results you may want to post it in several spots. One suggestion is texting it to yourself so you have it on your phone. Maybe hang a copy of it on the bathroom mirror so you see it each morning and evening, or perhaps keep a copy in your wallet or purse so it stays in front of you during the day.

You’ll find when you do something daily, then you can make it part of your routine in the future without having to be reminded of it, which leads to successfully changing the things in your life that are holding you back from enjoying your daily life.

“Life is not about finding yourself, it’s about creating yourself.” Make the changes you want to make in your life and start living the daily life you choose to live.
